Get Out and Do It: A Message to Myself
You have watched enough videos. The gear you have is good enough. Now just do it.
Sometimes I sit here and watch stories on Instagram, some of the boys ripping around on gravel bikes, filmed like a Tarantino film, and I am like fucked. I’ll need a new gravel ride. What camera did they film that on? What lens or focal length gets that kind of shot? I'll create this mental wish list of shit. Items that I think are going to do what? Make me have fun.The fun is in what they are doing. Not the gear they are on.
The message to myself is to make do with what you have and then build later.Growing up, I never had, like, a new skateboard. Parts were sourced from garbage bins and thrift shops. Surfboards were off the used racks or yard sales, and looking back, those were my favorite boards. My goal was not to compete with the best, but to be the best with what I had.
Today I think of it like: would you rather drive a fast car slowly, or drive a slow car fast? The answer is the latter. Everything you have now is so much better than what you had then, and you have lost the plot. Now you need to produce. Get out there. Ride your shitty bike. Take photos along the way. Record on the camera you have. Edit as best you can, and share your passions with your friends. I have an idea; have fun with it. Remember, doing more with less is what made you the man with more.
